REVIEWS FOR WE SPEAK NO TREASON
“225,000 words of ice and fire” THE LONDON TIMES
“Last of the Plantagenets, Richard III, now presented as lover, husband and father. Convincing reconstruction of fifteenth century England in peacock-bright colours of heraldry, with warm understanding of humanity, its lusts, tumulta, superstition and witchcraft.” LONDON EVENING NEWS
“She…is passionately involved with Richard and writes as if she had charged with him at Bosworth, protesting his innocence as did the good burghers of York when they wrote in their civic records: ‘Our good King Richard, late mercifully reigning over us. He was piteously slain and murdered to the great heaviness of this City.” LONDON EVENING STANDARD
“You have only to read any page to discover and enjoy the secret rapture of an English woman of today in love with a long-dead and angrily discredited king.” EDINBURGH EVENING NEWS
“Rosemary Hawley Jarman presents a fascinating portrait of one of the most enigmatic figures in our history…against a background of lusty, tumultuous fifteenth century England, with its superstitions and witchcraft, its courtly manners and cruel punishments, its sumptuous dress and pitiless warfare…” WYTHENSHAW EXPRESS
“…the overwhelming impression left by this outstanding historical novel – and it is quite outstanding – is of the way in which a talented writer has not merely immersed herself in a period of history but has given her heart, with all the passion of a poet, to the characters of her stormy, tragic tale.” CHURCH TIMES
“This novel…is at times spellbinding…” DURBAN (SOUTH AFRICA) DAILY NEWS
“…passages of moving prose. This is a fine narrative.” BRITISH BOOK NEWS
“This remarkably fine first novel…full of excitement and colour, with characters who come alive as very real people.” PUBLISHERS WEEKLY, U.S.A.
“There is a lyric quality about this book that commands attention and respect…the very feel of the day and light and mood rise up from the pages to insist that this is it, the way it really was. It is a very remarkable achievement.” THE BOOK NEWS
“Miss Jarman tells her chimney corner tale with grace and flair…a gutsy drama in high style.” KIRKUS REVIEWS (U.S.A.)
“The immensity of her research is plain from the brilliant picture she presents of life in fifteenth century England. The depth of her love of music is plain from the often glorious sonorousness of her prose…Jarman’s fine novel will fascinate a variety of readers; her skilled musical pen makes a compelling character of the last of the Plantagenet kings.” THE CAPE ARGUS (CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA)
“For those seeking an escape into every century but this and every country but their own, Miss Jarman’s book is to be highly recommended - for when one has read right through it one has the feeling momentarily of returning to an entirely unfamiliar world!” THE CAPE TIMES (CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA)
“A stimulating, thought-provoking historical novel…it’s almost impossible to believe WE SPEAK NO TREASON is her first novel…she has made fifteenth century England, the pageantry and all that went with it come alive.” FAIR LADY, CAPE TOWN (SOUTH AFRICA)
“Descriptive passages of great depth and beauty, not only taking the reader back to the fifteenth century but immersing him completely in the atmosphere and life of that time…” NATAL WITNESS, DURBAN (SOUTH AFRICA)
“The vividness of Rosemary Jarman’s documentation is unique. I have, for example, never seen at close quarters, as I see here, the modes of living that prevailed in the 15th Century England; the cut of the ladies’ dresses, their jewellery, their speech, the elegance of Edward IV and the soldierly plainness of Richard’s garb, the Maypole dancing, the mixture of gaiety and gloom manifesting itself at all social levels, the verve with which old, philologically interesting ballads were sung in castles and on village greens.” SATURDAY REVIEW - AUSTRALIA (“THE AGE”)
“It has been a long time since such an extraordinary historical novel has been written. It is called a mediaeval tapestry in the blurb and that is exactly the way it reads. So beautifully woven together the reader not only reads the authentic English of the era but lives the action as it happens. Let us hope Miss Jarman will continue to enchant her readers.” SANTA BARBARA, CALIFORNIA NEWS-PRESS
“The sights and sounds, the feel of fog and taste of ale are evoked so clearly and sensuously that readers will come to know the place and the time as if they had experienced it all. A lusty, immensely human novel that entertains and teaches simultaneously.” DE LAND, FLORIDA “SUN NEWS”
“A novel which still haunts me ten months after I read it.” A.W. PARSONS, DAILY MAIL
“Anyone who likes to walk through the doors of history, to live for days in another country, can do it without a Wells’ ‘time machine.” All he needs to do is to read such an extraordinary novel as WE SPEAK NO TREASON. Miss Jarman’s account is credible and beautifully written. Her character portrayals are vivid and extremely realistic, as is her interpretation of historical events…brilliant.” DES MOINES REGISTER, IOWA – U.S.A.
“A tremendous historical novel…an historical panorama which includes the intrigues of the Court, the plottings of Richard’s enemies, the love affairs and the faithfulness of some, the treachery of others. A superbly blended story of giant proportions.” CHARLOTTE COUNTRY FLORIDA CHRONICLE
“She has written a book so vibrant readers will wonder how she could have done it without resorting to 15th century sorcery…write Rosemary Jarman’s name in bright letters. Her Richard is a literary event.” THE BOSTON MORNING GLOBE
"What a magical writer...her prose glows with the vividness of a stained-glass window." EASTERN DAILY PRESS
"Her treatment of history has dignity and conviction." IRISH TIMES
""A masterly sweep of pageantry and romance...it cannot be too highly recommended." GLASGOW SUNDAY STANDARD
